Work at Chess.com - We're Hiring!

Submitted by erik on Wed, 06/18/2008 at 2:59pm.

We're expanding and growing and looking to hire for 3 new jobs! If you would like to apply, please read the instructions VERY VERY carefully.

Community Support

You are somebody who loves being online all day, especially hanging out on Chess.com. You'd do this job for free (or almost already do!) but would love to get paid for it instead :) You like interacting with other members. You are very handy on the web. You might not know HTML, but you have handy computer skills. You have a fun and friendly personality. You learn quickly. You have excellent attention to detail. Must have own computer & broadband connection. Must be 18+. Must have finished High School (or equivalent). Must have excellent communication skills in English. This is a full-time position. Compensation depends on experience.

Is this you? If so, send an email to job608@chess.com with the Subject "Chess.com Job: Community Support". In your email you should answer 3 questions: #1 - Who are you, what are you doing in life now, and where are you going? #2 - Why would you be good at this job (including relevant experience, etc)? #3 - What is your Chess.com username, and what would you improve about Chess.com? You may also attach your resume (optional).

Community Manager

You are fascinated with online communities and other consumer websites. You enjoy being online and have a very healthy understanding of the internet. You are good with people - both employees and customers. Maybe you are just graduating from college and can't stand the fact that you have to take some lame cubicle job. Or you are so bored of what you are doing at work now and would love to jump feet-first into full-time web work. Either way, you need to change things and do something you actually care about and where you will learn a TON. You understand at least a few of these concepts: web marketing, general management, product development, customer service, bookkeeping, UI/usability, online advertising, etc. You value experience and lifestyle over cash. You want to learn from an experienced team of webpreneurs. You will work directly with me to handle the too-many things that I do every day. You must be 18+. College degree preferred. Must have own computer & broadband connection. Must have excellent communication skills in English. This is a full-time position. Compensation (possibly including equity) depends on experience.

Is this you? If so, send an email to job608@chess.com with the Subject "Chess.com Job: Community Manager". In your email you should answer these questions: #1 - Who are you, what are you doing in life now, and where are you going? #2 - Why would you be good at this job, including specific experiences that have prepared you for this type of job? #3 - What is your Chess.com username, and what would you improve about Chess.com? Please also attach your resume.

Java Genius

You write web-related Java programs. You are fascinated with our Live Chess and want to help make it better. You are very comfortable with JavaScript and MySQL. You have probably tinkered around with Jetty and Comet. You love to solve tricky technical problems. This job is open to full-time or contract work. Compensation depending on experience.

Is this you? If so, send an email to job608@chess.com with the Subject "Chess.com Job: Java Genius". In your email you should answer these questions: #1 - Who are you? #2 - Please provide demonstrable relevant experiences? Please also attach your resume.

Please Note: You may only apply for 1 job. Please do not apply if you don't qualify. Please do not expect a response as we cannot give feedback to everyone.

Thank you!

Erik

Have you every read The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki - he presents a pretty good argument that might support the voting of the candidates.

Although I can understand why that is not desirable also.

the reason is because kids under 18 post stuff like "I hate the 18+ thing also, almost everywhere I look you must be 18 or older for a freaking job" :)

it's a question of maturity. ;)
