Round 8 at Mtel Masters

Submitted by SonofPearl on Fri, 05/16/2008 at 11:15am.

Topalov wins again to stay in contention

The amazing Veselin Topalov (artist's impression pictured!) convincingly won his 8th round game against his countryman and friend, Ivan Cheparinov to close the gap to former runaway leader Vassily Ivanchuk to just half a point.

Ivanchuk was definitely second best in his game but hung on to draw against Bu Xiangzhi.  Since his 5/5 start, Ivanchuk has now drawn his last three games.

Teimour Radjabov survived time trouble to convert a nice position into a win against Lev Aronian, who will probably want to forget this tournament as soon as possible.

The results in round 8:

Topalov, Veselin - Cheparinov, Ivan 1-0 32 D90 Gruenfeld Flohr
Aronian, Levon - Radjabov, Teimour 0-1 44 E97 King's Indian Classical
Bu Xiangzhi - Ivanchuk, Vassily ½-½ 61 A30 English Symmetrical

"Before, I would have bet on Ivanchuk winning this, but now I think Topalov will beat Ivanchuk, even if by a narrow margin"

Why would you think this. Ivanchuk beat Topalov in there game already and he is having an amazing tournament, I will not take anything away from Ivanchuk

I cannot believe Ivanchuck drew against Bu. His ultimate sac strategy had to have some flaw in it, but it seems like Ivanchuck is content with a simple lead in the tourney.

Amazing results now for both Ivanchuk and Topalov. Ivanchuk starts with 5/5, loses nothing, but still Topalov is only 1/2 point behind! According to ChessBase.com, Ivanchuk's performance rating is 2993(!!) and Topalov's is 2922(!!). If they continue like this, they could both go up alot in the next rating list.
