GM Karen Asrian dies at 28

Submitted by SonofPearl on Mon, 06/09/2008 at 12:53pm.

There was very sad news today as the young Armenian GM Karen Asrian (pictured) died suddenly and unexpectedly.  Early reports say that Asrian, who was just 28 years old, felt ill whilst driving in Verevan, the Armenian capital, and pulled over to stop.  He lost consciousness and ambulance crews at the scene believed he may have suffered a heart attack.

The opening of the "Chess Giants" tournament today in Armenia was delayed as players and spectators paid their respects to the young star with a minute's silence.

Karen Arsian was rated 2630 and ranked 92 in the world.

Sincere condolences go to his family and friends.

Gee whiz -- they're droppin' like flies this year! As if having lost Bobby Fischer and Bukhuti Gurgenidze in the past six months hasn't been enough...May Karen's soul rest in peace along with theirs!

Sadness and big shock.

He was a great chess player, but more than that, he was an excellent person and friend, one of the best I have ever met.

My deep condolences to Karen's family.
