Hey all. This post is another one for all beginning chess players, this one covers how to checkmate with just a king and a queen. I decided to post this endgame because at a recent inter-school event in my region it seemed as though no one in my region knew how to checkmate with these two pieces.

If you know, then it would be polite not to brag, and to let the beginners learn and comment on this position.

When our chess club went to a local elementary school, we taught the kids there to only move the queen until the king was on the edge of the board, then move the king.

Granted there are a lot of ways to deliver the checkmate, but that is what we did.

We called it "Building the wall."

You just keep walling the king closer to the edge. Although some of the kids had a hard time stopping once the king was on the edge and would stalemate, most of them got the hang of it rather quickly.

I do that too!  Doesn't matter how you do it as long as you can do it.
