Why is it that someone will inevitably post the follwing:

"This topic has been done to death" or "This topic has been done before"

etc

Who cares...if someone else wants to do it then cool...that means there are people checking out the forums that haven't seen those postings.

As much as I hate seeing the same topics get regenerated over and over again, I have to agree with you. Those of us who have been around a while need to remember that there are newer people joining who will not want to look back through 100 forum threads just to make sure their question or comment hasn't been posted before.

This is a chess site and the same topics will continue to be discussed for as long as the forums are used. Complaining that a thread has been done before doesn't make a lot of sense.

This does not however excuse the lame threads where people continually ask why people don't resign or how people can tell if someone is cheating.

Is this the right place to ask how to tell if someone is cheating?

Well, I think that we should all use this forum to find a way to show people that they should resign in a lost position. Your thoughts?

Perhaps because they haven't spell-checked their posting. (Just remind me again: is this the most annoying topic ever - or merely the most pedantic?)

I don't get annoyed about people posting the same topic over and over... I get annoyed when they could have put the topic name into the search box and the thread at the top of the search list answers their question.

Do we need Frequently Asked Recurring Topics - in addition to FAQs?

"If I am correct, this topic - and ones like it - are a measure of the health of chess.com - its blood pressure, if you like. The existence of this topic - and its predecessors and successors - indicates that there is both a sufficient supply of 'newbies' to whom this topic is fresh - and an adequate residue of 'oldies' - to whom this topic is stale. I predict catastrophic consequences for chess.com if this topic were ever to die out completely."    - Fizz's Feory

My guess would be that someone probably said it to them and ever since they have been itching to get a chance to use it..

It is a fairly retarded comment though, why go out of your way to put down someone elses thread? There are plenty more to read.

In my opinion the most basic forum netiquette requires checking if some subject has already been discussed on the forum before one starts a new thread, especially when the subject in question is not some exotic issue that noone's likely to have ever brought up before.

I always do a quick check before I start a thread, that's one of the purposes of the Search function and I don't think it's unreasonable expecting people to do so.
