With "one day" or more to make a move as the only available options on chess.com (perhaps I've missed a lower time setting), what's to stop somebody from using chess software or a chess computer to cheat?  Wouldn't lower time settings, say in the minute area, be a way to discourage that?  Allowing of course that most people don't or won't cheat, how do you stop a ratings cheater?

Good question.  I wondered the very same thing myself.  I'm sure this has probably been discussed before, but I'm new to chess.com.  Is there anything, other that personal integrity, to keep a player from using computer assistance?

Nope . This is one of the drawbacks of playing on the Internet , and nothing much can be done about it . Just have fun and don't take your wins and losses too seriously

Why would lower time limits prevent cheaters? Computer think out moves alot faster than humans.

I would think that the idea of being the unintelligent part of a machine would turn people off. But "winning" has a strange allure to people, even if it is the computer that is winning, and the person merely did what the computer said to do.

I agree with neneko. If cheating is your game, then it's likely they'll stick to short real time chess games, since having to setup the board and layout for a game everyday would become annoying.

This topic has been discussed many times before, there is nothing to stop someone from cheating.  It's unfortunate, but sooner or later they will be exposed.

if you suspect someone of cheating, then the easy thing to do is to put the pgn file into chessmaster, or some other program, and have the program analize the game.

True, but with a shorter time limit, it would make it that much harder to see the move, input it into a computer, get the answer, then make your move keeping up with the game compared to 1 day.  Perhaps I underestimate the capabilities of a chess compter as I've not used one.

yep you are greatly underestimating computers. The one which played against Kramnik in 2006 was calculating 2.7 million positions/sec. With 2Gb of RAM it means that it takes only 1 sec to depth 15, about 7-8 sec to depth 16, and below 30 sec to depth 17. (about 2-3 mins to depth 20) That is absolute depth (at depth 16 computer has calculated EVERY POSITION in next 8 moves (8 for both 8+8=16)). At this point relative depth usually gets to 40-50, in some simpler positions up to 60, which means that some of the positions appearing to computer as "more likely to happen" are analized 30 moves ahead. That is far beyond any human (or team, or hundreds of teams) is capable of.

BTW, computer like this are nowdays regular home machine.

In my oppinion, best protection against cheating is this almost unmatchable superiority computer has. It isn't even funny when your opponent has NO CHANCES.

if time limit is reduced to a minute, then someone might lose if they have to eat a meal, use the bathroom, go to school or work, talk on the phone. these are only a few ways people would lose

Not worried about my rating - it's a shiet number that means nothing to me, but cheating in general is an annoyance to me and was curious as to what others on this site thought as friends of mine have come across it on other sites.  Beyond that - if you gotta cheat to feel good about yourself, IMO you got bigger problems to deal with...

I have encountered a few probable cheaters on facebook chess.

One indication I received was comments by other players. A second was stupidity...  up a passed pawn and refusing to exchange a weak Bishop for a dominant knight... top ranked players telling me that they just started playing last summer.... yet they seem to have a sound knowledge of difficult positions. Some cheaters are using computers and some are just getting help from friends.

Is there a cheaters registry...where they can sign up!!!

This has been discussed to death on the forums. Look through the old threads and you'll find dozens on this subject.

Bottom line:

1. I, along with most people, do not cheat and believe that most people do not cheat.

2. If you suspect someone of cheating, use the Report Abuse link at the bottom of every page. The staff will deal with the issue.

That's just the point...What happens to cheaters and their game record. If I've lost a game to someone who was using a computer, I think the result should be reversed.

If you want your opponent to make their moves within minutes, you should be playing live chess. It sounds to me like you are more worried about players who take their fully allowed amount of time to make each move and dragging the game out than you are about people cheating. Play live chess if you are so worried about it.

believe it or not... people also cheat at live chess..

I play a tournament game once when my opponent arrived late and said that he was left handed and wanted to put the clock on the other side. I thought nothing of this at the time but what happened it that our times were reversed....That won't happen again!!
