Trash Talk

Submitted by Str8uchiha_sharingan on Tue, 06/10/2008 at 12:20pm.

There comes times in my on-line chess challenges that I can not play like a monotonous, robot. That's when the trash talk comes out. Most of the time, it is just a friendly "You got destroyed" or "Were you playing with your eyes closed?" I wouldn't necessarily call this trash talk, but I would tell an opponent on a slow moving turn to place one of his pieces on a particular square and 95% of the time, they respond with that move.  On rare occasions, the beast comes out

, especially when I have an opponent on the run. Vulgar insults pursue and it's invigorating to do so. I get really riled up when they talk trash back. All of this is in the name of fun; to liven the game competition up a little bit. Is this alright or should I continue to play like a computer program; emotionless and dull?

trash talk is good fun....as long as its not personal.  I understand the concerns of more cerebral players, but I think it can be a weapon to elevate your game..

most people who dont like trash talk, just dont respond....im not a top-level player, but i enjoy the give and take, the humorous comments.

I was once told that when you learn chess and become at least averge in the game (which is my current level), then you get hooked.  I'm hooked and nothing gives me more pleasure than a brilliantly played game on both sides of the table.  Unfortunately, there are times when I have received trash talk and dished it out which is more exciting then increasing your vision loss by staring at the screen, planning your next move.  I have received trash talk when I have made a blunderous move or loss a game, but that only makes me want to obliterate my opponent next game which I do most of the time. I respect the opinions of the dull and emotionless (classy chess players).  However, I never really was the type to conform to the norm. :)

I don't mind trash talking just as long as it does not get too personal.

I can see a little trash-talking among friends, but I prefer to keep most of my games classy, and I have NO appreciation for vulgarity whatsoever.

Interesting mix of comments, but I want to ask Sothilde why go for emotionless and dull.  Are you that way in life or is chess perceived to be that type of game?  And Rorkus007, I actually never, ever trash talk "after" a match especially if I have crushed my opponent. I'm at my classiest after the match.  It's funny, but Bobby Fischer made the game exciting because of his psych-numbing, rhetoric before his matches against the Soviet chess machine.  You could show me a thousand brilliantly played games (referencing online chess only), but none is more exciting than the trash talk in between.  I lot of times, I don't even say anything.  After my opponent's blunderous move, I just type........ :) or ;)

If it's someone I know, it's on. But if it's someone new - just regular chat.

I think it's always tempting to say a crass word when you are upset that you lost a game to a player who you know you shouldn't have lost to, and in most cases when a player has beaten you and their rating improves, this is okay because they have the chance to retort and they don't care because they won the game. But that being said, it doesn't show much class to beat a player and then rub it in, because they are already upset at themselves for not recognizing the (obvious) move, or for seeing it and not being able to do anything against it. Take your joy in the fact that you've won the game or made the best move, don't be an a--hole by rubbing it in!
