The Aggressive Middlegame King

Submitted by Ajfonty on Tue, 04/01/2008 at 1:33pm.

Many times in medieval history, in the midst of battle, a king enters the fray to rally his troops and win a victory against a difficult opponent. In chess, can the king function in this role?

Of course, in the endgame, the king has to be aggressive to ensure a promoted pawn or a winning position. But, in the middlegame, with the major pieces still inhabiting the board, can there be an offensive use for the king?

In the following game, we see a surprising attack by one player's king to secure the full point. Annotations are provided*.

A classic game. White achieved a winning position in the middlegame, but when it appeared that all his researves were spent, his commander entered the melee to finish off Black.
