Systematic King Assault

Submitted by Patzer24 on Mon, 08/18/2008 at 11:57am.

Here is a game from the 83rd French Championship, GM Apicella - IM Abergel with full annotations and commentary:

This game was an excellent display of an attack on the enemy King. In this game we saw black start the kingside initiative with a thematic f7-f5 pawn break to open the f-file for attacking possibilities and then importantly black later avoided any Queen trades which allowed him to maintain a decisive kingside attack.

good instructive game. It's games like this that make chess look so simple but when we try to replicate this its so much harder!

In particular the plan by black which struck me most was Nc6-b8-c6! Superb play by black Smile

Despite an inaccuracy ( 27.  ... Qh5 instead of immediate captue 27. ... Nxh3!! ) still a good example of a sytematic kingside attack!

This game is an inspiration for me to play the Sicilian.  Without f5 (or f4 as White), chess as we know it might fade out of existence due to boredom! :-)
